Dear Actionmarguerite residents & families,

On Wednesday, September 24th an open house was held for the CoHabit project. Actionmarguerite was well represented, and we want to say a big thanks to everyone who came out to the open house this week, and for sharing your thoughtful feedback. As the project continues to unfold, we promised to keep you informed and ensure you are aware of upcoming gatherings.

We really need your help at the City Zoning Meeting October 1

The last step to securing the land at 825 Taché is for City Council to vote in favour of re-zoning the land. This meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 1 and it’s the one and only opportunity to tell our City Councillors why they should vote in favour of rezoning the land for this project.

Council meeting information

We need as many people as possible to show up and to speak at the meeting about the importance of this project to you and to our community.

Accessibility:

The City Clerks have said that they will be able to accommodate wheelchair users at the public hearing next Wednesday. There is an elevator to bring folks to the room to speak and we have been advised that the security guards will be able to assist and direct people where to go.

What to expect at the meeting:

At this meeting, the City of Winnipeg staff and Réseau Compassion Network (CoHabit’s building partner) will each make a short presentation. Then, anyone who has signed up to speak will take turns speaking. We know that there are neighbours in the area who will be speaking against the development because they have fears of losing the greenspace along the river. We need City Council to understand:

  • How and why this project is important to you specifically, and to our community
  • The significant lack of accessible apartments and homes and the impact on you and your choices
  • That only having options to live with other people with disabilities is stigmatizing and isolating
  • That this project is critical to the human rights and inclusion for people with disabilities
  • That the community we imagine will be a vibrant and positive addition to the community
  • That we are counting on them to support this project

These are just some of our thoughts. You are the expert on why you support CoHabit, and your vision for an inclusive, supported apartment building. Please speak about what is most important to you!

We hope everyone clicks the link above to signup to speak and/or to record your written support electronically through the City’s website!

Thank you! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out,

Jennifer at jrodrigue@actionmarguerite.ca.

Wishing you well,

The Actionmarguerite Team
